Olives in fruit

The growth of olives in Portugal has a long tradition and dates back to the times of the Romans and probably beyond.

The olive is important to many recipes in traditional Portuguese cuisine and is served as table olives from the North of Portugal to the South.

Although there are 7 European recognised olive oil producing areas in Portugal, the main region of production in the North is the Tras-os-Montes and the Alentago is the main region for production in the South.

Some of the finest olive oil is produced in the region of Moura.
